Legislation in action

Proposals for new laws and amendments to existing laws arise for a variety of reasons. It may be to implement government policies or to bring international treaties into effect. Other proposals originate from the inquiries of parliamentary committees, from pressure groups or influential individuals, to support court decisions, or in response to particular events, community issues or needs.
